“Why am I black?” : the daughter of Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Louis Garrel evokes the racism suffered as a child

This Wednesday, January 25, Oumy Bruni Garrel was invited on the set of C à vous on France 5. During the interview, the daughter of Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Louis Garrel notably confided in the racism she has suffered when she was younger.

A star seed. This Wednesday, January 25, the film was released in theaters Neneh Superstar, directed by Ramzi Ben Sliman. In the casting, alongside Maïwenn, we find the promising Oumy Bruni Garrel, adopted daughter of Louis Garrel and Valéria Bruni-Tedeschi. The feature film tells the story of a 12-year-old girl, named Neneh, who dreams of entering the ballet school of the Paris Opera. Despite her enthusiasm, she will have to redouble her efforts to tear herself away from her condition and be accepted by the director of the establishment.

On the occasion of the release of the film, Oumy Bruni Garrel was present on the set of C à vous. The 15-year-old actress spoke about the film, and the common points she shares with the character of Neneh. Common points that are not necessarily all very happy. “I recognized myself in Neneh because I felt like it was me. Of course we have lots of differences but at the same time we are very similar, because we both dance, and we have problems because of our skin colorshe confided.

Oumar Bruni Garrel: “I said to myself ‘I want to be white'”

And to draw up a very sad conclusion: “it’s horrible to say that we have problems because of our skin color but it’s true. For example me in my dance school, I am the only black one. Like in the movie. And it’s true that suddenly there are a lot of similarities between me and Neneh”. In front of her, Patrick Cohen then wanted to know if, like her character in the film, she had already had one “fed up“to see how people of color are treated in France.”I felt it but more when I was little”replied Oumy Bruni Garrel, before adding: “because, already, I come from a family where both my parents are white from whom I received a lot of questions, like ‘but why are you black?’, ‘they are not your real parents’,… so yes i felt that and I said to myself ‘I want to be white’ or ‘why am I black'”.

The young actress now dreams that her film will inspire young girls of color to take the plunge by joining dance schools. “I hope they can tell themselves that it is possible, even if we are black”she concluded, full of enthusiasm.
