Why do so many young journalists leave the profession after seven years? Understand in three minutes

According to a study published in 2017 by the Observatories of audiovisual and press professions, 40% journalists who obtained their press card in 2008 left the profession after only seven years. They were only 28% among those who obtained it in 1998. This phenomenon continues to increase, to the point that we are now talking about a “generational specificity”.

To understand the reasons, The world In this three-minute video, traces the journey of aspiring journalists, from their studies in specialized schools to the practice of the profession within editorial offices. Interviewed, Jean-Marie Charon, sociologist and author of the survey “Young journalists, the hour of doubt” (Éditions Entremises, 2023), paints the portrait of a generation of professionals caught between their dedication to this profession – which always attracts many candidates –, economic constraints and managerial excesses.
