Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have stepped back from the royal family, but they still want their children to have a title. Here’s why.

It was in 2020 that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle made the choice to withdraw from the royal family, to leave England to live in California and above all to renounce their royal titles. But, if the Sussexes do not seem to regret their choice even if it takes them away from their family and in particular from Prince William and Kate Middleton, they want their two children Archie and Lilibet to have a title.

“It’s one thing to want to extract yourself from a context that you find harmful, to leave the burden that is the crown, because it’s extremely constraining, but it’s another thing to choose for their children”, told us Amandine Deslandes, author of “Diana Princess of Tears” before explaining: “What they want is to be able let their children choose what they want without forcing them to assume the consequences of their own decision. It is not a choice that they as parents want to impose on their children”.

Archie and Lilibet finally prince and princess

The title of prince and princess had been denied to Archie and Lilibet when Queen Elizabeth II was still alive. Meghan Markle had also insinuated that it was due to the skin color of her children and had deviously accused the Windsors of acting racist. Words that had then created controversy.

But, on the death of Queen Elizabeth II, 3-year-old Archie and 1-year-old Lilibet obtained the titles of prince and princess like their cousins, the children of Kate Middleton and WIlliam, George, Charlotte and Louis. They were able to obtain his titles since it is now King Charles III who is none other than their grandfather who is on the throne. Indeed, according to the protocol established by King George V in 1917, children and the king’s grandchildren must obtain the titles of prince or princess as well as those of royal highness. This change must however still be validated by Charles III himself.

The consequences of Meghan and Harry’s choice

By renouncing their titles of royal highnesses, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have given up a lot of things because they are no longer non-working members of the royal family. In effect, Prince Harry no longer has his military titles, those of Captain General of the Royal Navy, Honorary Commander of the Air Force and Honorary Commander-in-Chief of Small Ships. In this sense, he can no longer wear the official military uniform, something that has been observed during official events and in particular during the funeral of Elizabeth II. .

He was allowed to wear the uniform only to pay his respects before the coffin of the Queen who died on September 8, 2022. In addition, the Sussex couple can no longer make certain appearances alongside the royal family such as posing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during the Queen’s Jubilee. On June 2, 2022, the couple had indeed remained inside the palace when all the rest of the family were being cheered on by the British.
