Why electricity prices are skyrocketing (and unlikely to come back)

In 2023, the price of electricity is expected to increase by 15% for households. And it could have been much worse without the “tariff shield” introduced by the State. In short: he pays part of the bill. But this weighs on public finances.

For the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, one of the people responsible for this situation is the European electricity market, which he considers “aberrant” and “obsolete”. Concretely, this market would align the prices of electricity with those of gas, which have risen sharply since the war in Ukraine. Except that France uses very little gas to produce its electricity. So how to explain such a situation?
