While Facebook, instagram and several other apps have been banned from Russia for “extremism”, YouTube has yet to suffer the same fate despite warnings from the Kremlin.

And it could finally be that the video streaming platform suffers no reprisals.

Why can YouTube escape a ban in Russia?

YouTube resists Russian censorship. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Moscow has threatened more than once to block Google’s video streaming platform. Just last week, Putin’s government vowed retaliation after shutting down a Russian parliament’s lower house YouTube account that showed live streams of parliament and interviews with lawmakers. However, Russia does not seem to want to take action.

For Valeri Fadeev, President of the Human Rights Council at the Kremlin, YouTube has become a vector of false information on the war in Ukraine, but it is necessary to keep the platform online. He admits that if the Google service were to be blocked, then Russia would lose a fundamental tool in this information war. ” Otherwise, how do you promote your vision, your interpretation, your truth? There is no unambiguous answer ” did he declare. And knowing the Kremlin’s efforts to control information, there’s a good chance that YouTube will escape a ban in Russia.
