Why is talking about race useful? Rokhaya Diallo responds brilliantly

This Monday, March 29, 2021, in the program 24h Pujadas, the journalist and author Rokhaya Diallo returned to the term “race”, recalling its meaning and its usefulness in the field of social sciences.

“Race”, “racialized”, “race”… This Monday, March 29, 2021, journalist and author Rokhaya Diallo returned to the use of these terms at the heart of political debates. Should we use them or not? Are they not pejorative, when some claim that there is only one race, or rather species: the human? Rokhaya Diallo wanted to put the dots on the i’s concerning the use of these terms which are indeed useful in the field of social sciences, in particular, sociology.

Recalling that these terms were originally coined by feminist and anti-racist sociologist Colette Guillaumin, she explains: “When we speak of a racialized person, it is not a question of a state or a status, but of a process. (…) It is society that racializes. We are not racialized ( e) by birth. To be racialized is precisely to have a specific racial condition in a given geographical context. “

Rokhaya Diallo refers to people who, due to history and the systems that govern our society, experience discrimination. “Being racialized is not linked to birth, but it is linked to social experience”, she develops. A salutary speech, while part of the political class and the media are standing up against precious tools in the fight against racist discrimination.
