why is the song “Zorra” which must represent Spain controversial?

Even before the Eurovision 2024 final, Spain is at the heart of a controversy concerning the song that will represent it: “Zorra”. Here’s why.

While French cinema is shaken by several cases of sexist and sexual violence, Spain is in the midst of a controversy surrounding a song. In France, after the accusations against Gérard Depardieu, it is the turn of the directors Benoît Jacquot then Jacques Doillon to be accused of assault by the actress Judith Godrèche.

Iberian culture is in turmoil after the choice of a disturbing title for the Eurovision contest. After the hopes raised in 2021 by Barbara Pravi (who evokes violence suffered as a child) then the scandal caused by La Zarra in 2023, France this year chose Slimane (transformed) to represent her. Our European neighbors are not unanimous in their selection, for a very specific reason… The title of the song by the electro-pop duo Nebulossa: Zora.

A controversy in Spain before Eurovision

Last Saturday, Nebulossa was chosen to perform Zora during the Eurovision 2024 final. But not everyone likes it. Indeed, this word literally translates as “vixen” but has a double meaning: it designates women who have had multiple sexual partners, a bit like “female dog” in French. For singer María Bas, “this title is a way of transforming this word into something beautiful“, precise BFM.

But feminist associations do not agree and want the song to be withdrawn. The lyrics say for example “I know I’m just a female dog” Or “When I get what I want, it’s never because I deserve it”. For the Feminist Movement of Madrid which published a press release, Zora insults women in a macho way”. “Normalizing an insult does not allow any woman to emancipate herself”, he specifies. The Spanish Prime Minister himself even intervened. Pedro Sánchez said: “Feminism is not only right, it is also entertaining, which is why this type of provocation must necessarily come from the culture”. The organizer of Eurovision has ruled: the song is eligible for the competition, the final of which will take place on May 11, 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. In 2023, it was indeed the Swedish singer Loreen who won the competition with her song Tattoo. Will Nebulossa be his successor despite the controversy? Your turn to judge…
