why it could be authorized soon in France

On Wednesday March 31, 2021, deputies meeting in the Committee on Social Affairs said yes to the right to euthanasia for people at the end of their life suffering from an incurable disease. Next step, the hemicycle on April 8, 2021.

This is a first victory for activists in favor of the right to euthanasia in France. In the Social Affairs Committee, Wednesday March 31, 2021, the deputies approved a right to euthanasia for people at the end of their life suffering from an incurable pathology. “Pride, emotion and gratitude for my colleagues from all political stripes who adopted in committee the #PPLfindevie that I proposed to them after a debate which did honor to the AN. It is a 1st big victory for the right to our Ultimate freedom “, tweeted the deputy Olivier Falorni (Libertés et Territoires group), author of the bill “giving and guaranteeing the right to a free and chosen end of life”. The text must now be studied in plenary session at the National Assembly on April 8, 2021.

Stop “hypocrisy”

For the elected official, this right to medically assisted death would take the country out of a“hypocrisy”, because many people go to “exile” in Belgium or Switzerland to have recourse to euthanasia. In the 1st article of the proposal tabled in the Senate, it is mentioned that “any capable person of full age, in the advanced or terminal phase of a serious and incurable disease, whatever the cause, causing physical or psychological suffering which cannot be alleviated or whom he considers unbearable”, can request a “medical assistance” to die “by active help”. In France, the Claeys-Leonetti law, dating from 2016, authorizes the “deep and continuous sedation until death” for people whose prognosis is vital “short term”, but without going to active euthanasia. Mr. Falorni’s support “deplore the poor application of this law, in particular a lack of palliative care services”, can we read in West France. On the other hand, those against the proposal prefer to plead for the Claeys-Leonetti law to benefit from more resources, rather than opening up a right to “assisted suicide”.

Remember that active euthanasia results in help to a patient with an incurable disease who wants to die by an active gesture (injection of a lethal product). Death is thus quick, painless, and she remains conscious. While passive euthanasia is the principle of “let Die”. It is a refusal to relentless therapy on an incurable patient. After stopping curative treatments, the desire is to relieve pain with sedatives until cardiac arrest. The sick person, unconscious, slowly dies off.

In the Senate, at the beginning of March, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran had, for his part, declared that “Five years after the Claeys-Leonetti law, the main challenge is not so much to develop it as to make it known”.
