Why Julia Roberts refused to act in romantic comedies for 20 years?

“Ticket to Paradise”, in theaters next September, will mark the reunion of Julia Roberts with a register that made her famous, the romantic comedy. 20 years since she had done it. For what reasons anyway?

If Julia Roberts has regularly acted in “serious” films, such as the solid Erin Brockovich, The War According to Charlie Wilson or, to take an example dating back to the beginning of her career, the thriller Nights with my enemy, the name of the actress is above all inseparable from the romantic comedy register that made her famous.

We are of course thinking of Pretty Woman, an emblematic film of the 90s and huge success in theaters; Love at first sight in Notting Hill, another huge success alongside Hugh Grant; Valentine’s Day, My Best Friend’s Wedding… Just to name a handful. The rom’com’ therefore; a register that she is about to find with Ticket to Paradise, in theaters at the end of next September, where she shares the bill with George Clooney. The film will also mark her return to a register that she left 20 years ago. For what reason anyway?

She explains this in an interview with New York Times, and relayed by Variety. It’s not that she knowingly discarded the genre that made her famous; it is above all because she did not consider the scripts that were offered to her good enough, she explains.

“People sometimes misinterpret the time that has passed without me doing a romantic comedy, as if I didn’t want to do one. If I had read something that I thought was at the level of Notting Hill writing or the really fun level of My Best Friend’s Wedding, I would do it”.

For her, the scripts were not at the level before she received that of the director Ol Parker, director of Ticket to Paradise. And even; this film seems to have almost been scrapped too, because the actress believed that it could only work with George Clooney, long before the latter was attached to the project.

“If I felt there was something good, I would have done it! But I’ve also had three children in the past 18 years, so that raised the bar. there is no longer just the consideration of “is the script good enough?” It is also an equation with my husband’s schedule, that of the children’s school, school holidays. .. I am very proud to be at home with my family, and to consider myself a housewife”.
