While it only exists as a prototype, the future electric Renault 5 (R5) is already offering a special series. And this one will undoubtedly evoke some memories for Peugeot enthusiasts. This new version will be marketed when this new electric car is released in 2024.
Pending the official presentation of the final version, Renault must keep the spotlight on the future electric R5. To do this, the tricolor manufacturer inaugurates a practice that is surprising to say the least: creating a special series on a car that has not yet been marketed. The light gray electric Renault 5 you have in front of you is none other than the 2021 prototype, with a new body color and other small aesthetic changes.
Officially baptized “Renault 5 Prototype Roland Garros”, this new version sees the light of day as part of the partnership between Renault and the Parisian tennis tournament, which will be held from May 22 to June 11. It will also be exhibited throughout the event, alongside other brand vehicles.
Cosmetically, the Renault 5 Prototype Roland-Garros abandons the bright yellow of the first version, for a much more sober gray dress. Its side railings have motifs evoking the Cross of Saint-André, symbol of the Roland-Garros stadium. They are also adorned with a Roland-Garros logo, which replaces the number 5 initially present. A satin treatment of the window contours and a satin blue finish on the rims complete the range.
Before Renault took its place, Peugeot was for several years one of the main partners of Roland-Garros. The Lion has also launched special Roland-Garros series on its models on several occasions. In other words, it is not certain that this R5 is well perceived by the Peugeot teams… Especially since they have already seen several sizes leave them to join the firm at Diamond!
The most emblematic case is undoubtedly that of designer Gilles Vidal who, after flaunting his talent at Peugeot, took up residence at Renault. However, it was not he who designed the new electric R5, since the project was launched before his arrival.
The standard electric R5 will be unveiled next year. If the details of the range are not yet known, Renault ensures that a special Roland-Garros version will appear in the catalog. It will obviously be inspired by the prototype exhibited in the aisles of the Parisian tournament, and should be a rather chic version, in a range that would start at around 25,000 euros.
The electric R5 will be taken over by Alpine, which will offer a sportier interpretation. The model in question will bear the name of A290_β. It has just made a first appearance, again in the form of a prototype.
