Why Samsung’s first OLED TV wasn’t showcased at CES 2022

If you want to buy a Samsung OLED TV, this is not currently possible. Although Samsung Display now sells QD-OLED panels, Samsung Electronics has not officially presented a product using this technology. Yet this TV does exist: it was shown at CES 2022. Additionally, Samsung Electronics has declared their willingness to buy OLED panels from LG Display.

Why Samsung's first OLED TV wasn't showcased at CES 2022

We have been waiting for the arrival of QD-OLED since Samsung’s first indiscretions in 2019. We then learned that Samsung was working on OLED technology for TVs, although it has been the prerogative of LG for years. We brought up QD-OLED technology in a big issue this week. At CES 2022, several products were made official with this new technology. There is an ultra-wide monitor by Dell Alienware, it displays a definition of 3440 x 1400 pixels with a refresh rate of up to 175 Hz. Sony, for its part, presented a QD-OLED television, the Master Series A95K.

Samsung presented its new Neo QLED (Mini LED) televisions as well as MicroLED TVs, but lo and behold, no OLED product has been unveiled.

We have just learned that Samsung QD-OLED televisions do exist: they were shown in the halls of CES 2022. This series would be called Samsung QS95B with two diagonal sizes, 55 inches (55QS95B) and 65 inches (65QS95B) ), presented to journalists on site in the strictest of confidence. Obviously, there were indiscretions. Especially since this model was promoted on the CES site, in the list of CES 2022 award winners Best of Innovation Awards. We can read that this television is equipped with the Neo Quantum 2022 processor, a refresh rate of 144 Hz and four HDMI 2.1 inputs.

According to South Korean media, this QS95B model has been delayed by production issues related to component shortages. The market is tight due to a marked imbalance between supply and demand. This did not prevent Samsung Display from presenting its QD-OLED technology to its customers and certain media, and thus promoting its advantages over LG Display’s OLED panels.

Samsung Display explained that the QD-OLED’s color gamut has a very wide space, 90% of the BT2020 standard, which is 14% more than LG Display’s OLED screens (76%). Additionally, the peak maximum brightness is 1,500 nits, which is 50% brighter than what LG OLEDs offer. Finally, in terms of viewing angles, the 60-degree brightness on the side is also 30% brighter than LG panels.

Samsung Electronics wants to buy OLED screens from LG Display

What’s interesting is that we also learned that Samsung Display and LG Display are expected to provide OLED panels to Samsung Electronics respectively. From what we understand from statements by Han Jong-hee (Vice President Samsung Electronics) is that his division cannot have an appropriate product strategy based on the number of panels supplied by Samsung Display. As a result, Samsung Electronics branch is likely to partner with LG Display, which currently represents 99% of the OLED TV panel market worldwide.

Jong-hee Han, DX (Device Experience) division manager and vice president of Samsung Electronics, said at a CES conference: “We are open to all the possibilities of using OLED panels from LG Display“.

Today, the production of OLED panels by Samsung Display is only 30,000 pieces per month and is limited to 55 inches (4K), 65 inches (4K) and 34 inches (QHD). LG Display manufactures 90,000 pieces per month, with sizes from 42 inches to 97 inches just for TV. In short, direct competition between the two companies seems premature. As for the arrival of OLED televisions by Samsung, it is only a matter of months now.

Sony is taking advantage of CES 2022 to renew its range of TVs, notably with 3 OLED models, including a very special one since it uses a QD-OLED panel.
