why some gas stations are dry or taken over

Endless queues at service stations in Ile-de-France, outright closures of some of them in Lille, Marseille or on the motorway between Paris and Reims, interruption of school transport in the Somme… country as a whole, nearly 12% of stations are experiencing “difficulties on at least one type of fuel”, said the government spokesman, Olivier Véran, after the Council of Ministers, Wednesday, October 5. The situation varies depending on the region, Hauts-de-France being the most affected, with around 30% of its stations concerned.

There is therefore no “shortage, but there are tensions”who “are temporary”and “everything is put on the table to ensure that they are reabsorbed”, insisted Mr. Véran. The state has “was brought here and there, when necessary, to resort to drawing on strategic stocks to enable stations to be supplied”he said, calling for people to avoid “panic effect” rushing to the pump as a precaution.

For his part, the prefect of Pas-de-Calais announced on Wednesday the ban on the sale and purchase of fuel “in manually transportable containers”asking residents to “demonstrate civic-mindedness and solidarity”. According to him, the situation is particularly difficult in the areas around Arras and Béthune.

In question: the strike movement for wages within the TotalEnergies group which continued, Wednesday, for the second week in a row, at the call of the CGT. France has eight oil refineries in operation (seven in mainland France and one in Martinique). Of the five facilities operated by TotalEnergies, two remain entirely shut down, according to the union: that of Normandy, the largest in the country, which alone represents 22% of the territory’s refining capacity, and the biorefinery of La Mède, near Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône).

The movement was also renewed at the Flandres fuel depot, near Dunkirk (North). Regarding the Feyzin refinery, near Lyon (Rhône), mobilization marked time significantly. Finally, the sites of Donges (Loire-Atlantique) and Grandpuits (Seine-et-Marne) – in conversion and which currently serves as a fuel depot – did not vote to continue the strike. The Donges refinery is also planning a new day of action, Friday 14 October.

To this is added another strike movement affecting the two refineries of the American Esso-ExxonMobil, in Seine-Maritime and in the Bouches-du-Rhône. According to Christophe Aubert, CGT coordinator of the group, the sites are “always at a standstill”.
