Why the government wants to increase the list of sporting events broadcast in the clear

The Ministries of Sports and Culture want to increase the number of sports events broadcast unencrypted on television, with the aim of giving more visibility to disabled sports and women’s sports. For this, the government must expand the list of events broadcast free of charge in France, like the Olympics.

New sporting events could land in the clear on our screens. The Ministries of Sports and Culture wish to expand the list of events broadcast free of charge, by including the Paralympic Games in particular, and also by giving greater visibility to women’s sport. But before being disseminated in plain text, these new suggestions must first be submitted to professionals in the sectors concerned, then to the European Commission, which checks and validates the lists transmitted by the Member States.

Modernize the list of so-called “major events”

The government is currently working on modernizing the list of so-called “major” sporting events, which are broadcast in clear. Since a decree of 2004, 21 major meetings are, which means that a paying channel cannot reserve the exclusivity of their retransmission. Among these sporting events, there are for example the Olympic Games, the final of the French Football Cup, the Formula 1 Grand Prix de France or the Six Nations tournament.

The Ministries of Sports and Culture want to include the Paralympic Games in this list because for the moment, no event related to disabled sport is included.
