The case of the disappearance of Maddie McCann resurfaces. In recent years, some members of the Portuguese, English and German law enforcement agencies have expressed doubts about the testimony of the little girl’s parents.

Little Maddie McCann is missing since 2007 ; she was 3 years old, soon to be 4, at the time of the events. She was on vacation with her parents, her brother and her sister, in Praia da Luz in Portugal. After putting the children to bed, Gerry and Kate McCann had gone to dinner at the restaurant. When they returned, the little girl had vanished. From, several police officers questioned the version of the facts parents. This is for example the case of Peter MacLeod, a former English police officer. He expressed doubts in a book published in 2009, The Forbidden Inquiry, questioning the version of Kate McCann, who thinks that little Maddie was abducted from her room. He explained himself in 2019 in a podcast from the Australian site 9news devoted to the case.

Peter MacLeod went to the Ocean Club hotel in Praia da Luz, where the McCanns were staying during their vacation. For him, the kidnapper could not have entered the room because of the width of the window50 cm. “My shoulders are wider than this little window”, he said. According to him, it would have been difficult to remove little Maddie without making a noise: “Once inside, you must remove the little one without waking her, as well as the two other children in the room. It’s impossible. Or, at any rate, I don’t see how anyone could achieve that.”

More suspicions about Maddie’s death

In 2008, the former Portuguese investigator published a book, Maddie: The Forbidden Investigation, accusing the McCanns of covering up their daughter’s death. Sued for defamation, he was first ordered in 2015 to pay 500,000 euros to Maddie’s parents, before the Lisbon Court of Appeal overturned the conviction. In 2020, the German police, who then suspected Christian Brueckner, a man already convicted of sexual assaults on women and children, explained that they had “evidence” of the death of Maddie McCann. Designated as the main suspect in the disappearance of the little girl for three years, Christian Brueckner not charged due to lack of evidence against him. The German investigators have not dropped the case, underlines the DailyMirror this Saturday, March 4. Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters indicated that “the investigation is ongoing, but it will take much longer […] Maybe we won’t finish this year.”
