With more than 10,000 units sold, the Tesla Model Y is once again the most registered electric car in Europe in April. A great performance for the electric car, which is far ahead of its rivals as well as the Model 3 which is no longer even in the top 10. But that’s normal and we’ll explain why.
Nothing seems to be able to stop the formidable rise of Tesla, which has been multiplying very positive announcements for several months. After ending the year on a less than happy note, despite a historic record with one million cars delivered in 2022, Elon Musk’s firm has resumed its colors.
A rising market
The latter indeed made a good comeback at the start of the year, posting a very good balance sheet and even beating a production record with its Model Y. Its Gigafactory in Berlin is now able to assemble no less than 5,000 a week. In addition to the technical prowess, this announcement proves how much the electric SUV pleases. And this is confirmed in the figures.
Indeed, the automotive data specialist, Jato, just published his ranking of the best-selling cars in Europe throughout the month of April. We already note that the market is doing rather well, since registrations have increased by 16%, all engines combined. This is particularly the case for electric cars, with a market share of 13%.
A figure similar to that for France, while sales of electric vehicles have exceeded those of diesels. In total, there are therefore no less than 126,009 zero-emission cars (exhaust) which were sold last April in Europe, an increase of 49% compared to the previous year. A nice increase, which is undoubtedly explained by the increasingly vast offer as well as the price reductions.
If electric cars are currently still more expensive than thermal ones, parity should still arrive soon. But some models in particular are also responsible for this increase in sales, since they attract many customers. This is precisely the case of the Tesla Model Y, which became the best-selling car in the world in the 1st quarter, all engines combined. A historical record!
Again and again Tesla
The electric SUV continues to be a hit, having also been the best-selling model in Europe between January and March. Indeed, according to the latest figures, no less than 10,553 copies have been sold just in the month of April. Sales that remain stable compared to the same period last year, despite the two consecutive price cuts in January and April.
The 2nd step of the podium is occupied by the Volkswagen ID.4, whose sales have climbed by 125% to reach 6,542 copies. The large SUV is closely followed by the Volkswagen ID.3, recently restyled and totaling 5,913 registrations last month. Its sales then literally exploded, with an increase of 259% compared to last year. The small worries of the beginnings have therefore been forgotten.
The Skoda Enyaq, which has just enriched its range with a new Laurin & Klement version, is at the foot of the podium with 3,393 units. It is followed by the Dacia Spring with 4,191 units. Then comes the MG4, which is also a hit with 4,171 registrations last month. The Chinese compact has seen its range evolve slightly in certain European countries, as well as its prices, while a new station wagon version will see the light of day a little later.
Where is the Tesla Model 3?
Other models complete the top 10, including the Volvo XC40, Fiat 500, Peugeot e-208 and Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric. On the other hand, not the slightest trace of the Tesla Model 3, which is therefore largely left behind by the Model Y. This is quite normal, because the Model 3 is not manufactured in Berlin, but in Shanghai, and the deliveries are therefore made at the rate of the arrival of boats from China, as we explain in a dedicated file.
According to Jato, Chinese cars see their market share climb, but not as fast as expected. However, the country is now the world’s largest exporter ahead of Japan and Germany.
If we take into account the figures since January, the ranking is slightly different. We see the Tesla Model 3 appear in third position, behind the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.3.
