Slimming girdles are at the heart of a controversy. If they are usually used for therapeutic purposes, they are now being diverted and are even the subject of a challenge on social networks.

This is the new fashionable trend. Hijacking a product used for medical monitoring and making it a challenge on social networks. Slimming girdles are now used by many women in order to refine their silhouette. Worse, on TikTok, a challenge even appeared with the hashtag #bodysuitchallenge or “bodysuit challenge” in French. If compressing your body into a bodysuit seems trivial on paper, of doctors explained that this practice could be dangerous on the long term.

Brought up to date in particular by reality TV star Kim Kardashian – she even created her own brand which offers, among other things, this type of product –, sheaths therefore pose a health risk if worn for a long time. As Dr. Lionel Choukroun, plastic surgeon at the Clinique du Grand-Paris, revealed to BFMTV: “We compress a part of the body homogeneously, so it drives out the liquid, which goes back where it can: in the vessels.” And this one to add: “Squeezing the body so much can also displace the organs, which will no longer function normally.”

The sheath can cause severe inconvenience

The surgeon continued his reasoning with BFM TV : “The result, for example, is urinary tract infections, or, more seriously, thrombosis and possible pulmonary embolism, a very dangerous, even fatal disease.” These compression garments, which are not limited only to bodysuits, allow in particular to drain fluids and prevent inflammation after an operation. If this phenomenon of challenge mainly affects young women, some men are also tempted to participate. On TikTok, the hashtag #bodysuit has accumulated 1.7 billion views, of which the majority of recent videos are related to this challenge, while those related to the #bodysuitchallenge have been viewed nearly 2 million times. It’s not the first time that health professionals warn of the dangerousness of slimming girdles. Regularly, they remind us that wearing one for an evening is acceptable, but that you should really avoid wearing it every day. Otherwise, it’s exposing yourself to heartburn, acute esophagitis, or even incontinencefor the less severe inconvenience…
