why we shouldn’t talk about “car”

Togg, a Turkish electric car manufacturer, unveils its new fastback sedan, named T10F. On the program: a planned arrival in Europe and technical characteristics… surprising to say the least in 2024. We’ll explain why.

You’ll have to live there: Asian manufacturers want to invade Europe. The latest one? Togg. This name means nothing to you ? It’s normal. This is a new Turkish brand, sold in the country for several months, through the Togg T10X, a 100% electric SUV. On the occasion of CES 2024, Togg announces the arrival of a second model: the T10F sedan in fastback format. This will be sold in Europe, and in particular in France.

A “fastback” sedan

If the term “fastback” doesn’t mean anything to you, it is a body shape that allows the design to be more “sporty” than a classic sedan. This is notably the shape of the new Peugeot 408 (we are still waiting for the electric Peugeot e-408).

Togg promises us a very technological electric car, and also prefers to talk about an intelligent device (smart device). But hey, in fact, it is a car, certainly with a connected part. But this is also the case for its competitors. Clarification : This is a prototype, close to the series according to the brand.

There are two screens: a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 29-inch central screen for infotainment. Togg specifies that Qualcomm provides two Snapdragon processors to run the whole thing.

Up to 600 km of autonomy

For the electric part, we can count on three different versions, almost like at Tesla: propulsion with a “small” battery of 52.4 kWh, propulsion with a “large battery” of 88.5 kWh and all-wheel drive with the same battery. The autonomy is announced respectively at 350, 600 and 530 km on the WLTP approval cycle.

For comparison, the old Tesla Model 3 Propulsion (SR+) was given for 409 km of WLTP range with a smaller battery, with a capacity of 50 kWh. We therefore see that the Togg T10X will not be the queen of efficiency. In other words, consumption should not be its strong point.

Strange, when its aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cx) is given as 0.226. That’s about as good as a Tesla Model 3. We imagine that the weight of the Turkish car (between 1,939 and 2,215 kg depending on the version) must not help.

“Quick” charging, nothing more

For recharging, it will take 28 minutes to go from 20 to 80% battery on a fast DC charger. With slower AC charging, the car has a charger with a power of 11 kW which can increase to 22 kW as an option. Good news, which counteracts the barely adequate “fast” charging, especially for 2025.

In terms of dimensions, Togg has a length of 4.83 meters, a width of 1.881 meters and a height of 1.56 meters. The wheelbase of 2.89 meters gives hope for good roominess inside the vehicle. As for the trunk, we can count on a volume of 500 liters, which can increase to 1,350 liters once the rear seats are folded.

The Turkish manufacturer tells us that the performance will be there. In detail, the propulsion versions will integrate a single engine with a power of 160 kW (217 hp) with a torque of 350 Nm while the all-wheel drive version will be entitled to two units. That is a total power of 320 kW (435 hp) and a torque of 700 Nm. Enough to achieve 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds for the most powerful version, and between 7.2 and 7.4 seconds for other variations.

The Togg T10X does better than the Tesla Model 3 on at least one point: the turning circle, announced at 11.6 meters. This is 20 cm better than its American competitor. A little more practical, therefore, for making a U-turn and performing parking maneuvers.

A connected car for 2025

For the connectivity part, Togg promises level 2 semi-autonomous driving, thanks to adaptive cruise control and lane centering. We will also have access to bi-directional V2L charging, to power electronic devices using the traction battery.

For the moment, Togg has not announced the price of its future electric car. We just know that it will be available in 2025, particularly in Europe. There is no doubt that by then, the other manufacturers will have sharpened their weapons. We then hope that Togg will revise upwards certain elements of the technical sheet, which could seem outdated in 2025.

Currently, the Togg T10X electric SUV is only sold in Türkiye. For the moment, between 15,000 and 20,000 copies have been sold. Togg’s production capacities are quite large, with 100,000 vehicles per year and up to 175,000 in the event of expansion of the single Turkish factory.
