Winter time is tea time. From now on you should definitely add one ingredient to your hot drink: salt. We tell you the amazing reason.

A slice of apple, star anise, vanilla beans, cinnamon, cloves and dried cranberries – in winter we are particularly creative when it comes to spicing up our tea. We probably haven’t thought of one ingredient yet: salt. The mineral can have a positive influence on our health.

Salt in tea is healthy

According to the “Teebibel”, the first handbook on this special drinking culture, a pinch of salt is essential for the perfect preparation of tea. Ayurvedic teachings also support this assumption. It states that salt keeps the digestion going and stimulates the metabolism. An antispasmodic and tension-relieving effect is also associated with salt.

How often can we spice up our tea with salt?

Of course, we shouldn’t overdo it with the salt. It depends on the right dosage. Eating too much salt promotes inflammation, skin problems or high blood pressure. The kidneys can also be stressed. The WHO recommends a salt intake of less than 5 grams per day (equivalent to about a teaspoon of salt per day) to prevent cardiovascular disease. Therefore, you should not drink your salted tea every day and add even a small pinch.

And which salt is the right one?

If you want to support your gastrointestinal tract, rock salt is best. Sea salt is recommended for quick relief from tension.
