The iPhone 14 isn’t a big update. When comparing the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14, one wonders if it is not a good idea to skip this new generation.
The Apple keynote took place, we can breathe… Well, not really. It’s time for analysis, in order to better understand the challenges of this new generation of iPhone 14.
A big gap between the standard and the Pro
First analysis: it is clear that the gap between the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro has never been so important. Previously, these two iPhone lines differentiated on things like camera capabilities and multitasking performance, while keeping some core specs the same.
This time around, Apple is widening the gap between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro by hampering any real progress on the iPhone 14. That’s not to say it’s a bad phone, but this generational leap seems be quite small for the standard iPhone.
We are not going to list the notable changes and improvements at all levels on the Pro models. In any case, Apple has finally sought to offer substantial improvements over the standard models. They are now much better called “Pro” which is attached to them.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 14: very few changes
If we stick strictly to the main characteristics, the changes are almost non-existent between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14.
First of all, it still benefits from the 60Hz Super Retina XDR display. And, 60Hz refresh rate in 2022 on a phone over $1,000 is pretty unfortunate. There are $200 Android phones that offer 90 Hz… and even 120 Hz.
The processor is still an Apple A15 Bionic: no Apple A16 Bionic on the iPhone 14s, but it does benefit from the chip from last year’s iPhone 13 Pro. With an additional GPU core, graphics performance should be better. Will you see any differences between the two Apple A13 chips? Not necessarily at this level of performance.
Finally, the camera configuration remains the same on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14: two 12-megapixel sensors with a wide and an ultra-wide lens. We find the same technology. There is a difference though, as the main camera sensor sports a lens with an f/1.5 aperture, the same as the iPhone 13 Pro. This means better performance in low light.
Regarding autonomy, nothing has been openly confirmed by Apple and nothing will ever be, because the American company remains silent on the useful capacity of the battery. It will instead be necessary to go to the iPhone 14 Plus (6.7 inches), a newcomer which replaces the Mini version. Apple announces the iPhone with the longest battery life… up to +25% compared to the iPhone 13.
Finally, note that the design remains unchanged. We are always entitled to the huge notch. They have almost the same dimensions… the iPhone 14 is even thicker than the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 is slightly lighter though.
An iPhone 14 that has little going for it
This year, more than ever, the latest iPhone is a tough sell when comparing specs. Because of course there are a few small iterative updates, but the list of similarities has grown considerably longer. Especially since we must count on a considerable price increase this year. The reason ? Inflation, but also the euro-dollar exchange rate.

What’s new for the iPhone 14?
Both iPhone 14 models can detect car crashes with a redesigned accelerometer, allowing them to automatically call for help when needed. In addition, they can now communicate with satellites in the event of an emergency or for the Locate function. Nevertheless, this function is only available in the United States and Canada, moreover, it is paid. They also benefit from Bluetooth 5.3, to take advantage of the new features of the AirPods Pro 2.
The iPhone 14 is not for bargain hunters or those looking for peak performance. From our perspective, it seems more logical to head for the iPhone 13 or even the iPhone 13 Pro (depending on available stocks).
