Qualcomm announced on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the MWC in Barcelona, that the WiFi 7
would be available on the market from the second half of the year.
It’s not the battle of the Middle but the battle of W-Fi, and each new announcement seems to bring us a little closer to its arrival on the market, for end users that we are. The Taiwanese MediaTek has made promising demonstrations of Wi-Fi 7 in recent weeks, attesting to its desire to equip products intended for sale from 2023. The American Qualcomm took its competitor on the wrong foot by announcing Monday, since the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the commercial debut of its Wi-Fi 7 solution in the second half of… 2022.
Better traffic flow and “almost” zero latency
The world’s first Wi-Fi 7 (or IEEE 802.11be) product could therefore be available as soon as this year, and Qualcomm would do so through its solution called FastConnect 7800, a connectivity system that supports both the new Wi-Fi standard and Bluetooth technology. The San Diego firm is not lacking in ambition with its new connectivity solution, which it says will be ” the fastest and most versatile in the world “.
With its Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 solution, the manufacturer reports an examination of passage to 5.8 Gbit / s in peak speed (theoretical speeds) and an insolent or even almost zero latency, less than 2 milliseconds.
As we previously told you, Wi-Fi 7 is capable of using wide frequency channels: 320 MHz in total, with four streams of high-speed connectivity in the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands, which will help improve network traffic flow, using multi-link operation, or MLO, technology. And if the still new 6 GHz frequency band is not available, then it will be quite possible to obtain a generous 240 MHz spectrum in the 5 GHz frequency band which is indeed available in the whole world.
A pair of Wi-Fi 7 and improved Bluetooth
Qualcomm’s great promise does not stop at just Wi-Fi 7 as the FastConnect 7800 solution will be backward compatible with Wi-Fi 6 and 6E standards, using the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands via the functionality Stream Dual-Band Simultaneous (DBS).
And that’s not all, because Qualcomm will support the Bluetooth 5.3 standard, with double compatibility, in addition to twice faster pairing and twice the signal range for accessories. Switching a Bluetooth connection from your smartphone to your PC will be done for example without any effort, and the audio quality in Bluetooth (sound and voice) promises to be greatly improved.
The prospects for Wi-Fi 7 are in any case viewed favorably by the augmented reality and virtual reality sectors, as well as smartphones and gaming, which will soon have new quality arguments to present to their customers.
