Gargle test “Made in Vienna”: Dr. Manuela Födinger and her team have developed what is probably the most efficient PCR method, while other federal states are sinking into test chaos. That’s why she is the Viennese of the week for us!

Miss Dr. Reaching Födinger is a difficult undertaking given her schedule – we managed to do it nonetheless. In addition to the director of the Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics at the Favoriten Clinic, she is also Vice Dean of the Sigmund Freud Private University in Vienna. The gargle test you developed and which has now become famous across national borders is already considered a major milestone in the fight against the corona pandemic. But how did the scientist come up with the gargle, of all things? “It was clear to me that the original method, namely the stick in the nose, was especially painful for children. As a mother of two, I was looking for a harmless alternative. ”Many are now asking: Does gargling make you rich? She laughs and denies: “I have no financial advantage from it. I’m just looking for ideas and I know how to get things down to earth. ”Her new coupThe researcher was awarded the medal of honor“ Thanks and appreciation for services to the city of Vienna ”last year. In addition, she continues to research and tinker with new test procedures and ways to collect samples. Finally, Dr. Födinger the very good cooperation with Mayor Ludwig and Health Councilor Hacker (both SPÖ), which probably contributed a lot to the fact that Vienna is the lone leader in the PCR test field in a comparison of the federal states. The “lollipop tests” in kindergartens, which are currently being tested just as successfully, will soon be expanded.
