Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, started WikiTribune (now WT.Social) in 2017 in hopes of creating a social network on the fringes of capitalism.
A free social network without ads
Last week, network founder Jimmy Wales sent an email to his subscribers asking them to help keep WT.Social ad-free. As with Wikipedia, the platform survives thanks to donations from its readers. The creator insists: he wants to maintain a model based on voluntary payment and does not want to force platform users to contribute funding. The goal is not to create a huge platform, but rather to encourage an interested and creative community.
However, the free model is running out of steam. ” We are desperately short of money writes Jimmy Wales. The platform needs funding for marketing and communication, because it is still too little known. Thus, Wales asks users, patrons and interested communities to donate even small sums for his social network of another kind, which he finances for the moment himself.
Value the community
Jimmy Wales wants to relaunch the platform: the last few months have been dedicated to setting up new code and a new architecture for the network. He wants to create an algorithm that values quality posts, supporting creators and circulating their creations. According to him, it’s a completely different perspective from other social networks that value only viral … and hollow content.
WT.Social works on the basis of thematic community groups called “subwikis”. It is possible to follow a theme, publish in a group and comment. Users post articles, cartoons, images or even original text. The platform has almost 500,000 members, in a collective, supportive and highly politicized atmosphere.
