Wild rumor stirs up F1
Vettel’s team threatens a spectacular exit

The Silly Season, the wild carousel of Formula 1, is actually over. Now, however, a new rumor pops up that occupies the premier class: Otmar Szafnauer, Aston Martin team boss, may be facing a spectacular change.

Sebastian Vettel’s Formula 1 racing team may be facing a major upheaval. The French magazine “Auto Hebdo” reports that the current team boss Otmar Szafnauer could switch to rival Alpine – as part of the larger restructuring plans at the team, which previously operated as Renault. According to the report, Szafnauer himself is under pressure at Aston Martin. Billionaire and Besitzer Lawrence Stroll should not be convinced whether Szafnauer can successfully develop the racing team in the long term.

The plan: The American would succeed the current Alpine race director Davide Brivio. He had only come to the French team from MotoGP at the beginning of the year. Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi recently said of the planned restructuring at Alpine: “I look at everything from top to bottom and from right to left.” But it takes him a whole season to see what needs to be done.

“We are currently part of the Best of the Rest, but to really catch up with the very best, we may need a different structure,” said Rossi on the sidelines of the Mexico GP. First of all, they want to concentrate on the season’s end spurt and come in fifth. Alpine, like Aston Martin, is stuck in midfield. Even the sensational victory of Alpine driver Esteban Ocon in Hungary does little to change that.

In terms of points, the French are even better off than the Vettel team. Alpine is fifth with 106 points, Aston Martin has 68 points and is only seventh. Both teams are longing for more victories, more points and prestige. Aston Martin wants to drive for the title by 2024. Big goals. The reality at the moment: absolute mediocrity. Often in the back midfield. According to Rossi, Alpine also wants to provide a team within 100 races that regularly drives for victories.

So the desire for change is definitely there. So is Alpine poaching with its direct competitor? It’s still just a rumor. It fits on paper. Szafnauer has a lot of experience in Formula 1. He has been in the racing circuit for 23 years. After holding positions at BAR and Honda, he successfully managed Force India and Racing Point. And Aston Martin, CEO Martin Whitmarsh, has had a new man in a management position since October who is currently being “trained”.
