Grossarl was the venue for the traditional hunter’s ball on Saturday – this time with a taste. The raffle main prize was sponsored by an avowed Big Five hunter.
The reactions to the main prizes in this year’s Jägerball raffle ranged from “great” to “disgusting” on Saturday evening in Grossarl. Two hunting trips to Namibia including gnu shooting and Hungary were made available as main prizes. Roman Toferer, sponsor of one of the trips and a passionate big game hunter himself, immediately advertised himself on site: “If you’re a hunter, big game hunting is part of it,” says Toferer, who runs a travel agency for hunting trips abroad. “Every hunter dreams of shooting the Big Five,” says the former district hunter. “I have already fulfilled this dream,” Toferer continues. The big five include elephants and lions. You could hear the next table take a deep breath. “Hunting shouldn’t be about trophies,” said District Hunting Master Johann Sulzberger. Other guests were also outraged: “I honestly tell you, I would not accept this prize from the raffle.” The hunters present, who make up around eleven percent in Salzburg, saw this type of show of force as questionable Hunting is about preservation and protection, not showing off. Toferer is silent about the actual price of the big game hunt made available. One thing is clear: it is once again a high price that the reputation of the hunter has to pay for such outliers.
