It was said in a tone of evidence: “Unconditionally, there will be a revaluation of around 10% of teachers’ salaries and there will no longer be a career start under 2,000 euros per month. So I want to say here very clearly that it is conditional on absolutely nothing. The author of this intervention is none other than Emmanuel Macron, Wednesday evening during his debate against Marine Le Pen. The same one who assures since he is an official candidate that he does not intend to increase the salaries of all teachers, only those who would carry out new “missions”, such as replacing absent colleagues. These would be increased by 20%, said Emmanuel Macron.
Amount deemed too low
Its Minister of National Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, has been repeating for a long time that no teacher should be paid less than 2,000 euros per month, the function requiring a baccalaureate + 5 and losing a little more attractiveness each year. However, to date, teachers start at less than 1,500 euros per month – a little more for associates. With this proposed 10% increase, “it’s a question of being part of what has been undertaken for two years. Emmanuel Macron wants to go to the end of this revaluation”, indicates Emmanuel Macron’s campaign team, questioned by Release.
Teachers at the start and mid-career – up to twenty-two years of seniority – have indeed been increased in 2021 and 2022, by a few tens of euros per month. A measure much criticized by the teaching staff, for its amount deemed too low but also because it leaves a large number of teachers, the most experienced, on the side of the road. Not to mention that the multi-annual programming law initially promised by Jean-Michel Blanquer, which was to ensure a lasting revaluation, never saw the light of day.
No more specific item
Will the salary increase mentioned by Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday only be the continuation of what was initiated on the beginnings and mid-careers during this five-year term? Or will it be an extension to all teachers, even those who have worked for 30, 35 or 40 years? “If we believe what the candidate said on Wednesday, all teachers will be upgraded,” is content to respond to his campaign team, which does not have more precise elements at this stage.
Interviewed Friday morning on France Inter, the candidate clarified: “There will be for teachers, like for all the others, in the summer, as part of the Civil Service negotiations, a revaluation of the index point. Regardless of that, there is a revaluation which will rather be included in the finance law and which will take place in January of next year.
