Will one of the greatest SF films get a remake?

The directorial team behind the latest ‘Scream’ is said to be in talks to make a remake of the cult sci-fi film, ‘New York 1997’.

According to Bloody Disgusting and ComingSoon, the collective of directors Radio Silence – made up of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella – are currently in negotiations to make the remake of New York 1997 (Escape from New York), long in development by 20th Century Studios.

Radio Silence is known for having worked on horror films such as Ready or Not, V/H/S/94 and the last episode of Scream, released on January 12, 2022. They have just finished filming of Scream 6, scheduled for 2023.

While the remake has been in the works for several years now, Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell signed on in 2020 to write the film, but it’s unclear if he’s still tied to the project or not.

Before him, it was Neil Cross, producer and screenwriter of the Luther series, who was to take care of the writing of the feature film, with Robert Rodriguez set to direct it before the two finally abandoned the project.

As a reminder, John Carpenter’s original 1981 classic is set in a dark future (in 1997) where Manhattan has been turned into an island-sized super-high security prison.
