Will Smith’s slap has consequences: The Academy announces that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the actor.
The fact that Will Smith (53) attacked Chris Rock (57) on the Oscars stage had no serious consequences was widely criticized. Now there are some: The Oscar Academy has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the actor, as she announced according to several media reports.
Accordingly, Smith violated the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s guidelines for slapping the face. Specifically against “inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior,” as the Academy said in a statement. Smith could now face a suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

The measures are to be decided at the next scheduled meeting on April 18th. Smith has the opportunity to explain himself in writing before the vote. The statement also said the Academy wanted to intervene after the incident: “While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused to do so, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently .”
Smith stormed the stage on Sunday and gave comedian Chris Rock a resounding slap in the face for making a joke about Smith’s wife’s hair loss. A short time later he was back on stage and accepted the award for “Best Actor” for his role in “King Richard”. In his acceptance speech, he said, among other things: “Love makes you do crazy things.”
