Will Steam succeed in finally making Chromebooks interesting?

It’s official, Steam will make its debut on Chromebook. The opportunity to finally make them more attractive?

In the middle of the summer, we learned that Google Photos would arm itself with a video editor, first exclusively on Chromebook. On its way to wanting to make its computers more attractive devices, Google has just announced that Steam has just entered beta.

Steam enters beta on Chromebook

Between Windows, Mac or even Linux, it is difficult to find a place in the world of operating systems for the Mountain View firm. However, as the years go by, it tries somehow to offer a more complete experience within its ecosystem.

In this regard, here is just some news that has just fallen for Chromebook users: Chrome OS has taken advantage of upgrading to version 108 to finally decide to support Steam, as explained to us by the teams of The Verge. First deployed in beta version on Chromebook, Valve’s famous platform will use the Proton layer, like the Steam Deck, to make more Windows titles compatible (you will first need to activate Steam Play). Still according to the words of The VergeChrome OS will run the Linux version of a game in priority, provided, of course, that it exists.

Which compatible devices?

Google proudly announced that Chromebooks with AMD Ryzen 5000 C-Series processors and Intel 12^e generation are among the computers compatible with Steam. Among the twenty models concerned already confirmed, we find in particular the Acer Spin 713 and 714, the Asus Chromebook Flip CX9, the Dragonfly Chromebook from HP or the Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition.

Note that not all games will be supported out of the box. Nevertheless, iconic titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Portal 2 or Dark Souls: Remastered are already part of it. If you have a Chromebook compatible with Steam at your disposal (the full list is available in source), this is a good reason to relaunch yourself for the umpteenth time in one of these adventures. The American firm will probably be delighted to read your feedback in order to improve the quality of Steam on Chrome OS until the end of the beta, and beyond…
