The French Alizé Cornet, 37th in the world, achieved the feat of beating the world number 1 Iga Swiatek, this Saturday in the 3rd round of Wimbledon, thus ending the series of 37 consecutive victories of the Pole. She joins Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, 44th in the world, in the round of 16.

A feat. The French Alizé Cornet, 37th in the world, beat the world number 1 Iga Swiatek, this Saturday in the 3rd round of Wimbledon, thus ending the series of 37 consecutive victories of the Pole. The French won in two sets (6-4, 6-2), after only 1h31 of play.

“This court is a lucky charm for me”

If the world number 1 seemed invincible this year, the Niçoise therefore succeeded in what 36 players had not been able to do. Iga Swiatek had not lost a match since her elimination in the second round in Dubai in February and had won the six tournaments she has played since: Doha, Indian Wells and Miami on hard, Stuttgart, Rome and Roland-Garros on clay beaten.

“It reminds me of when I beat Serena. This court is a lucky charm for me. I’m a huge fan of Iga, who is so talented. She’s an incredible player, a very beautiful tennis ambassador female. I am very honored to have beaten him today”, rejoiced Alizé Cornet at the end of the match, at the microphone of the broadcaster BeIN Sports.

Next match against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic

This is the eighth time in history that a Frenchwoman has eliminated the world number 1 in a Grand Slam tournament. And the last time was already Alizé Cornet at Wimbledon in 2014 against Serena Williams. At 32, she too may be breaking a record in September. She is currently playing her 62nd Grand Slam tournament in a row and therefore she will break this record in September at the US Open.

Before that, the 32-year-old Frenchwoman will face in the round of 16 the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, 44th in the world, winner of the Czech Barbora Krejcikova, 13th in the world.
