Novak Djokovic only gives up 7 games in the 2nd round against Thanasi Kokkinakis. Casper Ruud, on the other hand, was eliminated.

The top 10 players

  • Novak Djokovic (SRB/ATP 3) sees Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS/ATP 79) 6:1, 6:4, 6:2
  • Casper Ruud (NOR/ATP 6) and Ugo Humbert (FRA/ATP 112) 6: 3, 2: 6, 5: 7, 4: 6
  • Carlos Alcaráz (ESP/ATP 7) see Tallon Griekspoor (NED/ATP 53) 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 0), 6: 3

The mission 7th Wimbledon title – it would be the 4th in a row – goes for Novak Djokovic further. Unlike in the first round, when the Serb had shown some difficulties against the Korean Soonwoo Kwon, Djokovic left no doubts against Thanasi Kokkinakis. Only in the very last service game did the 20-time Grand Slam champion have to fend off a breakball. Djokovic himself took the service from his Australian opponent 5 times. After exactly 2 hours the one-sided duel was over. In the 3rd round, Djokovic’s compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic (ATP 30) stands in his way.

Ruud has to give up early

The second round fared less well than the world number 3 Casper Ruud. This year’s French Open finalist, who is not one of the lawn specialists, got stuck on Ugo Humbert. The world number 112 gave up the first round, but then improved significantly and won the next 3 sets. The preliminary decision was made in the 3rd round, in which Ruud was able to quickly lead 3:0. But Humbert equalized to 3:3 and paved the way for a 2:1 lead with the break to 6:5.

Well recovered from his hard-fought 5-set win against Jan-Lennard Struff Carlos Alcaráz. The Spanish shooting star was wide awake from the start against Tallon Griekspoor and lived up to his role as favourite. Alcaraz won the otherwise very tight second round in the tie-break with 7:0. Griekspoor made up for a break deficit in the 3rd set, but ultimately couldn’t keep up with the power of his 19-year-old opponent. When the score was 3:2, Alcaraz realized the decisive break to an unchallenged victory. In the 3rd round, the Spaniard will compete with the German Oscar Otte (ATP 36).

Isner shocks Brits and knocks out Murray

John Isner (ATP 24) turned out to be the party crasher of the 3rd day of the tournament. The American giant countered Andy Murray (ATP 52) 36 aces and ended the journey of the crowd favorite at his home tournament. The 35-year-old Brit, who had triumphed twice at Wimbledon, regained hope by winning the third set. However, Isner destroyed this with the break to 3:2 in the 4th round. The 37-year-old service specialist did not let this lead be taken away. After 3:23 hours, Isner used his first match ball to win 6:4, 7:6 (7:4), 6:7 (3:7), 6:4.

Murray missed the 14th participation in Wimbledon for the first time in the 3rd round. Isner continues on Friday against Wawrinka conqueror Jannik Sinner.

Davidovich Fokina: point deduction at the wrong time

Not only local hero Murray experienced a bitter day. Also Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP 37) should not sleep too well on Thursday night. The Spaniard, who surprisingly defeated Halle champion Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 10) in the first round, received a point penalty against Jiri Vesely (ATP 68) at what was probably the most unfavorable moment of the game.

Because Davidovich Fokina, with a score of 7: 8 in the match tie-break of the 5th set after losing a point, threw the ball to another place out of frustration, he was punished by the referee with a point deduction, which sealed the Spaniard’s defeat. Vesely didn’t have to serve anymore and won 6:3, 5:7, 6:7 (2:7), 6:3, 7:6 (10:7).
