If you’re having trouble logging in to your favorite VPN for several weeks, undoubtedly the fault lies with a Windows update. Good news however, the problem has been resolved by Microsoft.
At the beginning of May, a lot of Internet users were complaining that their Windows machines were no longer able to establish VPN connections. Virtual networks were hovering in the void on the latest versions of Windows 10, Windows 11 and even Windows Server. A fairly annoying bug for Internet users concerned about their private lives and especially for companies which rely on this tool to provide secure access to their servers.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are eligible
After recognizing the problem without offering a technical solution (except the complete uninstallation of the faulty update with all the security fixes it contains), Microsoft has finally deployed a fix. In the detailed patch notes on its site, the company explains that this patch “fixes a known issue that may cause your VPN connection to fail following the April 9, 2024 update“.
The update is obviously available for Windows 11 21H2 (KB5037770), 22H2 and 23H2 (KB5037771), but also for Windows 10 (which still benefits from a few months of support) and for Windows Server since its version 2008 SP2 ( KB5037800).
This is obviously not the only change brought by this update, the system image also corrects important security flaws (including one used to deploy the QakBot malware on Windows machines), but the correction of the bug remains the most visible change for users unfamiliar with cybersecurity.
How to receive the update?
The update should download and install automatically, fixing the issue on all affected machines. If you don’t want to wait, you can force the download by going to your computer’s Windows Update settings (Settings, Update and Security, Windows Update, Check for updates).
For enterprise IT managers who cannot deploy updates simply, Microsoft still advises to simply uninstall the April update. On the other hand, you will have to go to the command line to do this properly and agree to delete the security patches at the same time as the rest.
