Microsoft is alerting its users: the Windows Patch Tuesday of August 2022 is likely to encounter a problem during installation. The procedure is not completed: the system displays an error message 0x800f0922, related to the management of the computer’s UEFI. Microsoft is looking for a solution to fix the problem quickly.
On August 9, Microsoft published as usual its Patch Tuesday, which allows you to fix bugs in Windows, while (sometimes) bringing in some new features. On the other hand, according to the Redmond giant, the operating system cannot install one of the components of this update. It is more particularly a security update which responds to the name of KB5012170.
The problem appears on all versions of Windows currently supported by Microsoft: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019… All editions of the OS are concerned.
Microsoft updates Windows with August 2022 Patch Tuesday, but introduces a bug in UEFI handling
On the occasion of the release of Patch Tuesday in August 2022, Microsoft took the opportunity to release a new patch. This is intended to fill a vulnerability in the management of PC startup, by adding the BootHole flaw to the blacklist of the Secure Boot Forbidden Signature database.
As a reminder, thea Secure Boot Forbidden Signature (DBX) database is a list of UEFI executables considered malicious or harmful to the PC. By deploying Patch Tuesday, Microsoft explained that a vulnerability present in the GRand Unified Boot Loader (GRUB)which Linux users are familiar with, is susceptible to being misused and giving a hacker the chance to bypass Secure Boot.

The problem is that this database update does not seem to install properly on all PCs. An error message 0x800f0922 is displayed, preventing the KB5012170 patch from installing. Note that the concern only concerns the update dedicated to DBX secure boot. The other Patch Tuesday components should install without any issues.
If you have already tried to install the update and encountered a problem, the solution is to update the UEFI of the machine. Once it has the latest version, Microsoft’s patch should install without issue. The other solution is to wait for Microsoft to release a Patch Tuesday update in the form of a KB patch. The Redmond company says that its developers are on the spot and that they should soon release a new patch to solve the problem.
