Windows 10 and 11: installation problem, taskbar disappearing… here’s how to fix the bugs in the latest updates

Updates KB5034763 and KB5034765, rolling out to Windows 10 and 11 respectively, are causing installation or taskbar issues. Users are still paying the price of a particularly extensive Patch Tuesday.

The traditional monthly security update for Windows 10 and 11, known as Patch Tuesday, has proven to be problematic, that’s the word, for many users. While it fixed no less than 73 security vulnerabilities, five of which were identified as “critical”, it also triggered cascading bugs, such as installation errors, file explorer malfunctions and even glitches in the taskbar. Not really ideal…

An installation that blocks Windows 11: three solutions to resolve the problem

Several users, perhaps this is your case, are experiencing installation problems with the cumulative update referenced KB5034765, intended for Windows 11 in its versions 22H2 and 23H2. Internet users who complain manage to install the update, but the problem occurs when restarting the PC, with failure and error codes 0x800f0922, 0x800f0982, or 0x80070002.

Is there any solution to fix this frustrating installation error issue? Fortunately, yes! To achieve this, you need to delete a temporary folder, “$WinREAgent”. The procedure is rather simple:

• use the disk cleanup tool in administrator mode, from the disk which obviously contains the folder,
• go through the command prompt, by running the line “rmdir /S /QC:$WinREAgent”,
• or, third solution, manually delete the folder using File Explorer.

Once the folder has been deleted, the installation of update KB5034765 can be restarted in the Settings > Windows Update menu.

A File Explorer problem that, for the moment, does not benefit from a fix from Microsoft

Other user reports report malfunctions in the taskbar and file explorer, again after Patch Tuesday. On Windows 10 (update KB5034763), system status icons disappear and applications pinned to the taskbar simply no longer launch. On Windows 11, the bar no longer works at all once the computer is started. There is nevertheless a solution, here is the one you must apply on Win 11:

• go to the Settings menu, then Windows Update,
• on Update History, select “Uninstall updates”,
• and choose the correct update to uninstall. You must then restart the update via Windows Update.

Regarding File Explorer, the problem would only occur since Windows 11, whether when shutting down the PC or restarting it, with an error message. “ The instruction at 0x00007FFB20563ACa referred to memory at 0x0000000000000024. The memory could not be written. Click OK to finish the program “, says explorer.exe. The problem would occur because of an external device, such as an Xbox controller. At this time, Microsoft has not released a fix to end the problem.
