Microsoft recently released an update for Windows 10 22H2, and one of the major new features concerns the significant reduction in the size of downloads. This improvement is made possible thanks to the implementation of features initially developed for Windows 11.
As of October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will officially no longer be supported by Microsoft. After ten years of good and loyal service, the operating system will give way to the new generation. That being said, the most dedicated among you will still be able to continue using Windows 10 in exchange for a few tens (or even hundreds) of euros.
While awaiting its final extinction, the OS with more than a billion users has not yet said its last word. In a blog post, the Redmond firm announces that updates to version 22H2 of Windows 10 will now be much lighter on the scale!
A popular Windows 11 feature is coming to Windows 10
In October 2021, Microsoft explained how the “ reverse update data generation » made it possible to reduce the size of Windows 11 updates by 40%. This technique consists, again according to the American giant, of “ effectively distribute the forward delta to the machine and allow it to maintain a path back to its original state “.
Simply put, this process aims to make your updates slimmer than in the past. This ensures that you save considerable time when downloading and installing them on your device.
Good news: the many Windows 10 users will in turn be able to benefit from it. In a recent blog post, the company led by Satya Nadella confirmed the arrival of this function previously reserved for Windows 11.
Windows 10: the weight of updates significantly reduced
In its post, Microsoft indicated that Windows 10 22H2 users can now enjoy the same features as Windows 11 customers regarding the speed of downloading and installing updates. Here is more exactly what we can read there, as reported to us by Neowin :
“ This reduction in LCU package size provides benefits such as reduced bandwidth usage, faster downloads, minimized network traffic, and improved performance over slow connections “.
For your information, the download size of the latest Windows 11 Patch Tuesday was around 830 MB. For its part, the non-security update for Windows 10, released this week, does not weigh more than 650 MB.
Despite these improvements, Microsoft continues to encourage users to upgrade to Windows 11. Yes, official support for Windows 10 will end in a little over a year, with the exception of professional and general public users who will opt for paid updates. For the record, you will still have to pay 61 dollars the first year, 122 dollars the second and 244 dollars the third year.
