Windows 11 22H2: Improved Explorer with tabs is coming

On April 5, Microsoft presented the “Future of Hybrid Working”. This nebulous title could mean anything or anything. But Microsoft SEO Satya Nadella was personally announced as a speaker – and next to him Panos Panay, who had already presented Windows 11. A large part of the technology world assumed that Microsoft would finally officially announce the upcoming Windows 11 22H2 and name a start date. That didn’t happen. Instead, Microsoft promised a revised Explorer – with tabs.

Explorer with tabs in Windows 11 22H2?

Browsers have long since become indispensable without using tabs. And the idea of using tabs in Explorer is by no means new. Various file managers in Linux have been using tabs for years, as have alternative file managers for Windows such as Total Commander. Microsoft was already experimenting with it in Windows 10, but rejected the idea for the time being. Finally, in March 2022, the feature resurfaced as part of A/B testing in Windows 11. Microsoft is currently making the tabs available to more and more testers. This suggests that the new Explorer will already be an integral part of the operating system with Windows 11 22H2.

There are other innovations for the Explorer: A fresh start page will replace the quick access in the upper left corner of the program window. There are significantly more pinned folders and entries of recently used files than before. There is also a new favorites list. Use the context menu for files to add entries to this list. Microsoft also simplifies the sharing of files via OneDrive, Outlook, Teams.
