Third-party widgets, offered through the Microsoft Store, but not only, will arrive in a few months with Windows 11 22H2.

The idea of allowing third-party widgets was raised shortly before the launch of Windows 11, but ultimately it was not. Currently, Windows widgets are limited to those from Microsoft. Nevertheless, the company has not abandoned this concept and will integrate third-party widgets in version 22H2 of Windows.

Windows 11 22H2, Windows 11 as it should have been released?

Well, it’s not for now, since Windows Central specifies that this version, designated by the code name Sun Valley 2 internally, will not be finalized until next summer, with a view to deployment in the fall.

Like version 1511 of Windows 10, this version of Windows 11 would be a “polish” release from the OS. It will add features that could not be finalized in time for the initial launch. Among these, the integration of third-party widgets, therefore. Note that the 22h2 version could also sign the return of drag and drop for the taskbar and introduce support for Android applications.

Third-party widgets, and not just from the Microsoft Store

Coming back to third-party widgets, Microsoft will allow developers to create and offer their own widgets. These will be downloadable directly from the Microsoft Store, but not only. Indeed, applications not listed on the Microsoft Store could also offer widgets.

Developers are said to be already working on third-party widgets for popular apps so they’re ready when the feature launches.

In short, it will certainly take a little patience, but the arrival of third-party widgets will eventually arrive in Windows 11. This adoption is all in all consistent, since last June, to present its OS, Microsoft argued that ” For creators and publishers, widgets also open up new spaces in Windows for serving personalized content. Our aim is to create a dynamic channel for global brands and local designers, so that consumers and designers can benefit.
