You may not have known it, but the horizontality of the Windows taskbar is not fixed, and the user can opt for a vertical mode. At least that is the case, except with regard to Windows 11

Indeed, since the launch of Windows 11 (already in October 2021), the taskbar has lost its modular side. It is therefore impossible for users to switch it to one side of the screen, as was the case before. Some users grumbled, but Microsoft quickly decided: under Windows 11, the taskbar will remain horizontal.

Windows 11, goodbye to verticality

For some reason, switching the Windows taskbar to one side of the screen seemed like a “native” feature. However, citing a feature that is not popular enough, Microsoft has therefore decided to freeze it with Windows 11.

But thanks to a small utility, it is now possible to find this valuable functionality. This will first require downloading and installing a small file called Windhawk.

Well, not exactly !

Offered for free download, Windhawk is a small utility that provides access to several forms of extensions. Among these, we find a certain “Vertical Taskbar for Windows 11”. Once Windhawk is installed, using the search bar, simply go in search of the precious extension.

Once the extension is installed, the Windows 11 taskbar will automatically be switched to the left part of the screen. Although it is possible to modify its size, it is however impossible to position the taskbar anywhere other than on this left side.

Also, it should be noted that the extension is still in development and has some shortcomings. This concerns in particular the display of certain applications (the time and date for example), or even windows which move to the top of the screen when they are minimized. There is no doubt that future updates will refine this new extension.

So worth testing for anyone who wants to benefit from a side taskbar again in Windows 11.
