In Windows 11, do you miss the ability to move the Taskbar to the side of the screen? Microsoft has in fact decided to remove this option from its operating system. Luckily, there is a way to restore it. Here’s how to do it.
There Taskbar Windows has always been very “malleable”, since it is possible to place it on the left, right, top or bottom (its default position). However, this functionality disappeared with the launch of Windows 11 in October 2021. So no luck for those who were used to position the Taskbar on one side of the screen.
And if this decision makes the users concerned cringe, Microsoft does not intend to reverse it. From 2022 the Redmond giant explained that the possibilities of the famous Windows 11 bar would not change. Microsoft explained at the time that the problem was too complex to solve and that this positioning possibility was not popular enough. But that was without counting on a little saving utility…
This is how to place the Windows 11 taskbar on the left of the screen
If you want to find the Taskbar vertically, nothing could be simpler. Firstly, it is necessary to download and install the Windhawk app. Distributed free of charge and available in around fifteen languages, this software (linked below) allows you to install a plethora of extensions, including Vertical Taskbar. In Windhawk’s search box, simply enter the term “Vertical” and you should instantly find the right extension. Install it.
Once the extension is in place, you should see the Taskbar appear vertically, on the left side of the screen. Reopen Windhawk: if it is not possible to place it on the right or at the top of the Desktop, you still have a way to change its size.
Having used it for several hours, it is clear that this mini Windows 11 “hack” works wonderfully. However, we note some oddities, such as the time and date which are displayed at 90°, or the Start button menu which is always presented in the center of the screen. In its defense, let us point out that the extension has only just been released and is still in development. We can bet that it will be enriched with features and that it will correct its bugs in the coming weeks. But for a first draft, it’s rather very successful (provided you appreciate the placement on the left of the Taskbar, of course).
