Windows 11: Microsoft blocks 22H2 update on PCs with dynamic disks

Another installation problem for Windows 11 22H2. This time it’s users with a dynamic disk who can’t take advantage of the latest big update. Microsoft has not yet communicated on the subject, but the firm has already expressed its reservations about the technology in the past.

Windows users are unfortunately used to installation problems when deploying an update, but Windows 11 22H2 seems to be breaking records. Drop in performance for Nvidia graphics cards, download that does not start, even blue screens of death for the unluckiest… The installation looks like a real obstacle course for some.

The problem of the day, spotted by a member of the Deskmodder forum, is quite surprising. Indeed, while the minimum configuration has not changed since the launch of Windows 11, a few users receive the error message 0x8007001 during installation. However, this error corresponds to a problem with the disk on which the Windows partition is located, whereas the persons concerned have not changed disks since the last update.

Microsoft no longer wants dynamic disks for Windows

After investigation, it turns out that the problem occurs among users using a dynamic disk. For some time now, Microsoft has stopped recommending its users to use dynamic disks, preferring to direct them to Storage Spaces to take advantage of the same features. This could therefore explain this error message, although the Redmond firm has not provided any confirmation.

If you do not know what type of disk your Windows partition is installed on, here is the procedure to follow to find out for sure:

  • Right click on the menu To start up and select Disk Management
  • Right-click on your Windows partition (usually VS :) and click Properties
  • In the window that opens, go to the tab Material
  • Select your disk and make a double click above
  • In this third window, go to the tab volumes and click the button Populate
  • Watch the line Kind to know your disc type

If it says “basic”, you should theoretically have no problem installing Windows 11 22H2. For the others, a member of the Deskmodder forum found a temporary solution. Just replace the file install.wim from the 22:2 update setup to the 21:2 update setup for the installation to go smoothly.
