The Moment 2 update will fix slow file copy issues on Windows 11 that have been plaguing for several months now.

Last fall, Microsoft rolled out Windows 11 22H2, its annual major update. As always, this update came with its share of bugs. Following numerous complaints from users, the Redmond firm confirmed in October that Windows 11 is experiencing severe slowdowns when copying large files from this new version.

A problem in the kernel

The problem has still not been resolved to date, but a fix should finally be available soon. The Moment 2 update is indeed expected in March 2023, and should put an end to the concern that we have known for months.

As a reminder, this bug causes a very strong degradation of transfer speeds when copying large files. This particularly concerns systems that use copying involving a server, but some devices also experience difficulties for purely local operations.

At first, Microsoft believed that an element of the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol was at fault. The American company finally realized that the source of the problem was deeper, relating to the kernel itself, explaining the long delays in resolving the bug.

Moment 2 update is coming

Microsoft recently changed its update release strategy. From now on, Windows 11 only receives one big update per year, instead of two before. In return, intermediate updates called Moment are deployed at a more regular pace. This method allows the firm to make features available bit by bit, as soon as they are ready to be launched on the stable version of the OS.

Shortly after the launch of Windows 11 22H2, for example, we were treated to the first Moment, which introduced tabs in File Explorer and support for Android applications via the Amazon App Store.

Moment updates are therefore far from being anecdotal. With Moment 2, the system should receive performance optimizations and improvements, new features, and potentially the latest AMD driver for Ryzen 7000 X3D processors.
