Many players on the Windows 11 version 22H2 have experienced performance issues.
In addition to the case of PCs equipped with an NVIDIA graphics card, resolved thanks to the release of a recent driver, these performance drops can also come from security features, according to Microsoft.
Games seized by Windows 11 security?
The computer giant has indeed published a support page focusing on options to optimize in-game performance on Windows 11. It attributes these problems to two security features specific to this version of the operating system. The first is called “Code Integrity Protected by Hypervisor” (or Memory Integrity, for short). The second is the “Virtual Machine Platform” (or VMP).
As its name suggests, the PMV provides access to Windows services via a virtual machine. Memory Integrity is there to protect the computer against certain types of attacks which aim to inject code and infect the machine. It also ensures that the pilots launched are trustworthy.
Of the two, Memory Integrity therefore presents itself as the most important for the security of the computer, while the VMS has a more relative utility. In any case, these two features seem to significantly affect in-game performance, as evidenced by the need for Microsoft to create a support page on this subject.
How to Disable Offending Features…If You Dare
Players who feel that their updated Windows 11 is causing them problems in their games will therefore be keen to find the cause and eliminate it. In this case, these two security features could be to blame, but disabling them might put the computer at risk.
If it suits the more determined, here is the procedure to follow to deactivate one and the other of these features:
Disable Memory Integrity
- Select Start, then Settings;
- Open Security Settings, then Windows Security;
- Enable Open Windows Security;
- Switch to the Device Security tab;
- Click on Core Insulation Details in the corresponding category;
- Check if Memory Integrity is enabled or not;
- Deactivate it if necessary, then reactivate it if necessary.
Disable Virtual Machine Platform
- Open the Start menu, then type Windows Features;
- Select Enable or Disable Windows Features;
- Find Virtual Machine Platform in the list;
- Uncheck the box to deactivate it, and recheck it to reactivate it if necessary.
Note that a restart may be required to apply the deactivation of either feature. Similarly, some PCs updated to Windows 11 from Windows 10 may not have these features enabled by default.
It will be necessary to check whether the in-game performance has improved or not if the features were activated as standard. Otherwise, it will be preferable to reactivate at least the Memory Integrity, and the PMV if necessary.
