Windows 11: soon a QR code generator to facilitate the transfer of files and links

A beta version of Windows 11 brings link sharing by QR code to the Edge browser.

Microsoft is preparing the arrival of a QR code generator in Windows 11. The feature was spotted in build 22635.3420 of the operating system’s beta channel. It should soon arrive on a stable version of the OS if the tests are conclusive.

A new sharing option in Edge

To benefit from this new option, you must use the Edge browser. When you are on a page that you want to share, you can right-click anywhere on the site and select “Share” in the context menu. By going to the browser settings, you also have the option of enabling the display of the “Share” button in the toolbar for more direct access.

With the update, the Copy Link option is no longer the only option for live sharing without going through a third-party app. Now we can find an icon with a QR code when we choose “Windows Sharing Options”.

This QR code generator is a new tool to simply transfer a web page or files stored in the cloud to another device or to a third party who is next to us. This avoids sending a link by email or messaging when it is not necessary.

Scan a QR code rather than copy a link

To access a website or a cloud file on your smartphone, simply scan the QR code displayed on the computer screen. This is not necessarily more practical for Android users using the Link with Windows application, but it can be useful for iPhone owners. Some third-party services offer solutions that may be more practical, but at least we have a new native tool available that can troubleshoot effectively.

Microsoft has also made another change to content sharing via Edge. With Windows 11 version 22635.3420, the Share window can no longer be closed by accident by clicking outside of it. You must click on the cross at the top right to close the window.
