A screenshot would confirm the appearance of this new feature in the coming weeks.

If Microsoft wanted to keep the surprise for an announcement with great fanfare, it’s missed.

Confidential information, released by a Microsoft engineer

Windows 11 recently introduced tab support in Explorer windows. It was a long awaited feature power userswhich allows them to maximize their productivity without being scattered in dozens of windows displayed on the screen.

The publisher therefore does not intend to stop there and would prepare the introduction of tabs in an application widely used by all: the notepad.

Microsoft did not confirm the information directly, but an engineer working for the publisher inadvertently posted a screenshot of the application, which shows two tabs open in a single window. A system that should save RAM while in use

The idea of introducing tabs in the notebook is not new. The Windows Latest site recalls that Microsoft already had plans to offer this functionality through Windows 10, in several system applications. The project, dubbed “Sets” internally, remained in development for some time and was canceled in 2019, due to numerous technical problems.

The appearance of tabs could have repercussions on the amount of memory ingested by the application. As we know, many users do not care about this problem and open dozens of pages in their browsers. Microsoft has however partly solved this problem, if we refer to the consumption of new explorer tabs, almost invisible with each open tab. Tabs should even be beneficial, since they will save the most intensive notebook users from having to open multiple instances, which mechanically increases the amount of allocated memory.

The integration of tabs in the notepad does not seem to be advanced yet and it will probably be several months before seeing it appear first in beta versions, then in future Windows 11 updates available for all.
