Microsoft has given Windows 11 an extended, improved tablet mode. This allows you to better operate devices with touch-sensitive screens. This is how you use it.

- Windows 11 has a tablet mode for smaller devices with a touch screen.
- It is activated automatically if the device has a touch screen. On 2-in-1 devices, you activate it by undocking the keyboard.
- Unlike in Windows 10, there is no dedicated switch to turn tablet mode on and off.
Tablet mode in Windows 10 was already a great feature that greatly improved the user experience with tablets and other touchscreen devices like 2-in-1 laptops. This mode is also included in Windows 11 and it is even more intuitive and easier to use. We tell you when it makes sense, how you use it and how you can disable it.
Tablet mode on Windows 11 becomes active automatically
Under Windows 10 there was a dedicated switch in the settings with which tablet mode could be activated or deactivated. This is no longer the case with Windows 11: Here the mode is automatically active if the device only has a touchscreen and no keyboard or mouse is connected.
With tablet mode, many menus and the taskbar are significantly enlarged to make them easier to tap with your finger. The mode is automatically deactivated as soon as it is detected that a keyboard is connected and the device can be operated in this way. You can no longer “force” Windows 11 to turn tablet mode on or off.
Stuck in tablet mode? How to disable it!
If you have a Windows 11 touchscreen device that shouldn’t be in tablet mode anymore because you reconnected the keyboard, you can try restarting the device to force it into desktop mode. If that doesn’t work, you should check whether the connected keyboard is recognized correctly.
