Microsoft is pushing its latest OS towards accessibility by introducing a new volume mixer. By modernizing the old feature of Windows 10 which is very popular with users, it wants to offer a more convenient way of controlling the volume.
On earlier versions of Windows, it was possible to change the volume directly from the taskbar. With the arrival of Windows 11, Microsoft had lightened the interface by moving the volume mixer to the OS settings. Not really practical. The next update will change things.
A more modern volume mixer
This new feature is scheduled for update 23H2, which should arrive in October. It will therefore be synonymous with a return of the volume mixer directly accessible by a right click from the desktop. No more digging into the settings to adjust the sound equalizer between different apps.
The feature is therefore not a “new” in the sense that Microsoft understands it, but rather a remaster. As before, it will therefore be possible to modify the volume of all the applications or programs launched on the PC. The interface, on the other hand, will undergo a small facelift to make it more in line with the look of Windows 11. It is possible to glimpse the future changes planned on the screenshot below. Don’t expect to fall out of your chair either, we’re sticking to the classics.
A familiar and more accessible interface
If Microsoft is making a U-turn on this aspect of its OS, it is because its users were largely accustomed to the possibility of controlling the volume directly from the desktop. This small icon had been present since Windows 95, so the choice to make it disappear had not really been welcomed with open arms.
From a strictly ergonomic point of view, controlling the volume of individual applications through the settings was clearly a questionable decision. Microsoft wanted to lighten the main interface for the sake of simplicity and modernization. The idea was also to consolidate all system settings in one place. The search for a clean interface is not necessarily synonymous with success at all levels, here is the proof.
With the future update 23H2, Microsoft finally reintegrates this mixer which was missing. It will be accessible from a new keyboard shortcut WIN+CTRL+V and will be accompanied by other new features.
