The taskbar of Windows 11 has caused a lot of discussion since its release. Opinions are divided on the new position of the start menu and the widgets. After Microsoft announced it would be restoring some old features, a popular feature is now surprisingly being removed.

As WindowsLatest reports, this is the ability to move icons in the system tray – or notification area – the taskbar. The menu in question is located after the ^ icon on Windows 10 and Windows 11 and houses icons of active applications.

The feature has been removed in the latest pre-release 22563 available to Insider program participants. So far, users have been able to use drag-and-drop to create order and rearrange the symbols as they wish.

Affected users initially thought this change was a bug, WindowsLatest continues to report. Instead, it’s a feature, as Microsoft made clear in a statement. The function was removed as part of adjustments and optimizations for tablet PCs. Users who want to adjust the order in the system tray will in future find a corresponding menu in the system settings.
