On the occasion of a Hackaton project, Microsoft employees looked into a “portable console” version of Windows 11.
The idea would thus be to adapt the operating system to popular devices with the hybrid PC community such as the Steam Deck.
Microsoft explores other horizons for Windows 11
As a reminder, the Hackaton is an annual internal Microsoft event, during which employees are encouraged to explore new ideas. While the Steam Deck revived the craze around portable/PC hybrid consoles, one of the most promising ideas of a recent edition revolved around a Windows 11 interface adapted to this kind of device.
Baptized in the language of Shakespeare ” Windows 11 Handheld Mode “, This one thus proposes to optimize the experience of the operating system of Microsoft on the Steam Deck, but also on similar consoles. This would go as much by a faster launch of the games as by an optimization of the touch screen.
Even though Windows can already be installed on the Steam Deck, its interface is still sorely lacking in ergonomics with Valve’s console controls. The idea put forward during this Hackathon therefore intends to correct this pitfall.
A project that has a chance of succeeding?
Many projects imagined during the Microsoft Hackathons never saw the light of day. However, in this specific case, the firm strongly encouraged employees to ” think seriously about a Windows version compatible with portable consoles “.
The American giant intends in this way to strengthen its image and its credibility with the community of PC gamers that it is trying to bring to Windows 11 with more or less success. While devices like the Steam Deck are on the rise in this community, the opportunity seems too good to pass up.
Especially since the future competitor of the Steam Deck, the ASUS ROG Ally, will have a version of Windows 11 suitable for portable use. So there is a good chance that we will see such a thing develop in the more or less near future.
