Microsoft continues to improve historic Windows software in small steps. This time, it’s the turn of the ever-present “Notepad” to gain welcome features.

If you have ever typed a few lines quickly in Windows Notepad, you have probably already realized that Microsoft’s word processor was missing an essential feature: spelling correction. Microsoft has finally corrected this glaring lack in Windows 11, and in a rather clever way at that.

For certain file types only

In addition to underlining misspelled words in red, like any other word processor does, the notepad will also offer automatic correction features, similar to what Android and iOS do, so as not to waste your time when writing. It will also be possible to ignore certain “errors” or add words to the system dictionary so that you no longer see them underlined in red later. The correction will also be multilingual if you regularly type in more than one language.

But where Microsoft has done things smartly is that this feature will be enabled by default only for certain file formats. If you open documents containing code or system logs, spelling correction will be disabled automatically so as not to color your entire screen red. Given that the notebook is regularly used for this type of use, it is pleasant to see that the Redmond firm has thought of the most advanced users.

Tons of new features for small software

This new feature, all in all quite banal, arrives after a host of others, all aimed at making the use of the notepad easier. At the end of 2023, the software was equipped with an automatic recording function as well as a sign counter. More recently, the firm had even injected a good dose of AI into its rudimentary word processor, even if it meant making it lose its simple and agile side.

Only present in the beta versions of the system for the moment, more specifically the Canary and Dev branches, the spelling correction functionality will arrive for all Windows 11 users later in the year. And if you are registered in the beta program and you do not take advantage of the new feature, don’t panic, Microsoft is deploying it in waves to avoid spreading any potentially annoying bugs.
