Windows, Office, Amazon and Co.: That will change in 2023

The year 2023 brings many changes for tech fans. Among other things, Windows 8.1 and some Office versions will be discontinued. You can find out what you need to prepare for in our change overview for the year 2023.

January

In January, Microsoft will end support for several services, most notably Windows 8.1. Support for the old operating system will end on January 10, 2023. From this point on, Microsoft can neither provide customer support nor deliver security updates. Anyone who is still using Windows 8.1 today should initiate an update as soon as possible.

Also, on January 10th, Microsoft will end support for Visual Studio 2012, a popular programming service, and some smaller, non-essential products.

On January 31, Amazon will end support for Amazon Drive, the cloud storage service formerly included in the Prime package. From this point no further files can be uploaded; everything that has been stored in the cloud so far can be downloaded until the end of the year on December 31st and will then be irrevocably deleted by Amazon.

Google’s game service Stadia will also be overtaken in January. You still have time until mid-January to secure your scores and refunds for purchased hardware and games.

If you have a Sky Q subscription, you will soon have to do without three channels. At the turn of the year, Junior will be dropped from the pay-TV package, followed in January by the documentary channels NatGeo and Nat Geo Wild.

March

Another change for fans of gaming nostalgia is coming in March 2023: On March 27th, the games and console manufacturer Nintendo will remove the option to buy games for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS via the Nintendo eShop. From this point on, games for these platforms can only be purchased physically.

April

On April 11, Microsoft will end support for all programs that were included with Office 2013. This includes apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access 2013. Users of these programs must switch to a newer Office license, ideally to Office 365 right away.

August

Google will end support for one of their cloud services, the IoT Core Services, on August 16, 2023. This allowed business customers to easily and easily link and manage IoT products and services via the Google Cloud Console. However, this feature is more interesting for the B2B area.

October

Even more services that are being discontinued by Microsoft: For Mac users, support for Office 2019 will end on October 10, 2023. Here, too, it is advisable to switch to a current license for the popular office software after support has ended. An update to Office 365 would be the best solution here.
