Microsoft’s operating system may be outdated, but it continues to impress us, almost four years after it was discontinued.
The days of Windows Phone are long gone. If the OS, in its different versions, did not succeed in conquering the smartphone market, it was no less impressive. Fluid, accessible and rather well designed, it was part of Microsoft’s desire to export the Windows experience to mobiles, consoles and tablets.
And, the firm had worked rather well on certain aspects, as evidenced by these images.
An original and unexpected combination
Imagine a MacBook that’s a little old, a little outdated. And then visualize it running Windows 10 Mobile. The mental exercise is not easy, since it is an operating system for mobile phones which was not designed for an Apple branded computer. And yet, the Nobel Tech YouTube channel demonstrates it to us in one of its recent videos.
The YouTuber seems to launch the OS using a bootable USB key and Boot Camp, and quickly finds himself faced with the very recognizable Windows Phone interface. It uses the computer’s trackpad to navigate between menus and applications, and the keyboard is supported, at least in part. However, other essential components do not appear to be functional, notably the wifi chip.
UWP capabilities in the spotlight
The experience remains impressive. Especially since, throughout its journey, Nobel Tech shows us some applications that adapt perfectly to the MacBook screen. The calendar, for example, is perfectly usable here, even though it was designed to be used vertically. The settings menu is not left out and closely resembles that of Windows 10.
And, it’s not for nothing. To allow developers to easily transpose their applications from one type of device to another under Windows, Microsoft created the UWP platform. The fact that Windows Phone apps can fit on a computer screen is therefore not surprising. It is good to see the result of the American firm’s work in such an original context, years later.
So, is Windows 10 Mobile on your MacBook worth it? Not really. If Nobel Tech does not share an installation guide, the operating system has not been supported for years. Many of its features are now obsolete, and in all cases, the experience is not always optimal and stable. Additionally, some elements, like the notifications menu, don’t lend themselves very well to this new environment.
It remains to be seen whether the port of this OS can be improved and optimized in the future. Which would be as useless as it is intriguing.
